Following the success of vaping, we’ve witnessed a rapid rise in the range of different smoking cessation aids available over the last decade. As e-cigarettes aren’t the right fit for everyone, it only makes sense that new and innovative technology is being introduced to cater to every kind of user. One of the latest vaping alternatives to see widespread popularity is heated tobacco.

Heated tobacco products, also known as “heat-not-burn” products provide users with an excellent substitute for cigarette smoking. By heating real tobacco to a specific temperature, these devices deliver all the taste and satisfaction of traditional cigarettes but without any combustion taking place, and two brands at the forefront of this technology are IQOS and Ploom.

Back in 2022, both brands caused quite a stir by releasing their latest heat not burn devices. IQOS brought us the IQOS 3 Duo, and Ploom launched their long-awaited Ploom X kit. But that got me thinking— which is better?

After getting my hands on both the IQOS 3 Duo and Ploom X kits and trying them out for myself, I’m eager to share my experience. In this review, I’ll provide a side-by-side comparison of each device, picking apart their features, performance, design, and flavour selection to help you decide which heat not burn device could help you quit smoking for good. Let’s dive in!

IQOS 3 Duo Features

IQOS 3 Duo

  • Compatible with Heets sticks
  • Battery Size: 2900mAh
  • USB Type-C charging
  • Combustion-free and smoke-free

Features Comparison

When it comes down to the key features, it’s clear to see that both the IQOS 3 Duo and the Ploom X share the same aim; to provide users with a real tobacco experience that replicates the sensation of smoking a cigarette thanks to the use of heated tobacco sticks. And with no tar, ash, or foul odour to worry about, both devices achieve that flawlessly. Nevertheless, there are a handful of key differences between the two.

Perhaps one of the most notable differences between these kits is the battery capacity. While the Ploom kit houses a 2000mAh battery, the IQOS cigarette is loaded with an ample 2900mAh battery, giving it a slight edge when it comes down to power. However, it’s important to note that the IQOS kit contains 2 different elements; the holder and the pocket charger. Although the pocket charger packs plenty of power to keep you covered for an entire day of puffing, the detachable IQOS holder can only provide enough power to heat up 2 Heets sticks.

Meanwhile, the Ploom X contains one singular device that can heat up to 20 Evo sticks in just one charge. Both devices support super-fast USB-C charging, and despite their large battery capacities, I found that they reached full power after just 2 hours of charging.

Now that we’ve covered the key features, let’s explore how each device looks.

Iqos 3 Duo Design

IQOS 3 Duo

  • 2 components - holder and pocket charger
  • LED indicators
  • Size: 114 x 46 x 23 mm
  • Weight: 128g

Design Comparison

Even though IQOS and the Ploom kit share the same goal, it’s obvious when you place them side by side that they’ve gone about achieving it in totally different ways. The first thing that caught my eye when comparing these two devices is the size difference. While the Ploom X is the smaller device overall, fitting neatly into my palm, the IQOS holder is noticeably smaller, with a shape and size akin to a cylindrical pen-style disposable vape.

However, the IQOS pocket charger is much larger and taller than both its holder and the Ploom kit. So, it’s important to remember that if you want to use more than 2 Heets sticks, you’ll need to take both the IQOS holder and pocket charger with you. Therefore, for those on-the-go, the Ploom X is definitely the more pocket-sized device overall. Nevertheless, both devices are pretty comfortable to hold, with both brands opting for smooth plastic casing with rounded edges for an ergonomic feel.

When in use, both devices make it as easy as possible to keep users aware of its current status. Both e-cigarettes feature LED indicators and both kits will begin to vibrate and flash when it reaches its optimal temperature and is ready to use. When your current heated tobacco stick is depleted, each device will vibrate and flash one more to indicate that it’s time to dispose of it and replace it with a fresh one.

Moving on from the exterior, let’s take a look at what flavours are available.

Moving on from the exterior, let’s take a look at what flavours are available.

Flavour Comparison

Just because heat not burn devices use real tobacco, it doesn’t mean you’re restricted to plain old tobacco flavours. In fact, both brands have a wide variety of great flavour profiles to choose from. With 10 IQOS flavours and 9 Ploom flavours to choose from, there’s something for everyone. Both brands have followed a similar theme when it comes to their flavour range, focusing their efforts on tobacco, mint and menthol blends. Head over to my Top 5 IQOS flavours to see the very best Heets sticks blends available.

Both the IQOS and Ploom have included a click capsule option too. Heets Sienna Caps and Option Evo Sticks contain a small mentholated capsule that releases a minty burst when pressed, allowing you to enjoy both a tobacco and menthol sensation in just one stick. But it’s not all traditional classics, both brands have some great fruit flavours to choose from too. The Mauve range of Heets sticks and Magenta range of Evo sticks blend the sweet notes of fresh forest fruit with mellow tobacco for a complex flavour sensation.

Now that we’ve covered the flavour options, let’s check out what other products these brands offer.

IQOS 3 Duo Vs Ploom X Ranges

IQOS 3 Duo Vs Ploom X Ranges

Although the concept of heat not burn technology hasn’t been around for very long, IQOS and Ploom were two of the first brands on the scene, so it should come as no surprise to learn that they’ve released more than one device over the years. IQOS currently has one other heated tobacco device up for grabs, the IQOS 3 Multi. This kit works in a similar manner to the IQOS 3 Duo, but much like the Ploom X, it features only one component. With no pocket charger to worry about, the IQOS 3 Multi allows you to enjoy 10 back-to-back Heets sticks without having to recharge.

Meanwhile, Ploom made their initial debut with their Ploom S kit. This device works much in the same way as the Ploom X, but lacks the latest technology. The Ploom X is essentially an upgraded version of their Ploom S kit, boasting a refined heating system and extended session time. Plus, the Ploom X is noticeably smaller, sleeker and easier to use than their original kit. So, it’s safe to say that they’re heading in the right direction with their latest heated tobacco device.

IQOS 3 Duo Vs Ploom X Market Comparison

IQOS 3 Duo Vs Ploom X Market Comparison

As heated tobacco technology is still very much in its infancy, IQOS and Ploom don’t have an abundance of competitor brands to worry about. Nevertheless, as these devices are beginning to grow in popularity, we’re seeing a rise in new heated tobacco brands hitting the shelves, and one such brand is Pulze. First released in Italy, Poland and Greece last month and due to reach UK shores later this year, the Pulze 2.0 is rumoured to pack enough power and premium flair to give IQOS and Ploom a run for their money.

While the IQOS kit can power up to 2 tobacco sticks per charge, depending on the specific model, Pulze 2.0 will give users the freedom to enjoy up to 20 tobacco cartridges on one single charge, making it ideal for users on the go. Although this device hasn’t hit our markets just yet, I’m excited to give it a try when it does and see how it compares to both IQOS and Ploom.

One heat not burn brand that’s already reached UK markets is Neafs. Their flagship Teo device is reminiscent of the Ploom X, sporting a one-component design and the ability to use up to 20 Neafs sticks per charge. However, Neafs are entirely tobacco-free. Instead, they use tea leaves to achieve an aromatic and smoky experience. This allows them to offer nicotine-free options, which currently isn’t offered by any other heat not burn brand.

IQOS 3 Duo Vs Ploom X Verdict

IQOS 3 Duo Vs Ploom X Verdict

As I’ve mentioned throughout this review, the IQOS 3 Duo and Ploom X set out to provide users with a very similar experience; a real tobacco sensation without any combustion, ash, or odour. And after trying these kits out for myself, it’s safe to say that they’ve both achieved that goal brilliantly. Heated tobacco kits are a great option for those seeking an authentic tobacco taste or those who struggle to stick to vaping.

As the blends offered by both brands are almost identical, the flavour selection isn’t something you need to worry about when making your decision. Both brands offer a great range of tobacco, mint, menthol and fruit themed options to suit every kind of user.

If you’re having difficulty choosing between Ploom and IQOS, there are a few key points to consider when making your decision. Perhaps the most important is the size of the components. If you’re seeking a pen-style compact device, and don’t mind carrying around a pocket charger with you, then the slimline frame of the IQOS holder is the perfect choice as it’s certainly the more discreet option of the two.

However, if you’d rather have an all-in-one kit without having to worry about lugging around a pocket charger, the Ploom X is probably more suitable. Not only can it power up to 20 Evo sticks on a single charge, but this compact device is perfectly pocket-sized and sits discreetly in your palm.
